This body of work utilizes memory, history and sensorial experience in an effort to understand my identity as an American female of Ukrainian descent, with a focus on food as a cultural icon and catalyst in my work. More importantly, I am avidly attempting to preserve my Ukrainian heritage and culture; this is done both in a metaphorical and literal sense by using perishable foods and materials specific to Ukrainian cuisine. Through my research I have uncovered a melancholy and grotesque past that accompanies the notion of food as a cultural icon, which has influenced a large part of this work. By establishing a relationship that exists between food-related memories and histories, the significance of food as it relates to Ukrainian culture can be understood.
